Farewell Dinner at Hackerhaus
After our tour of Neuschwanstein Castle, we loaded back on the bus and drove another two hours to Munich.
Once we arrive and unloaded, we said farewell to our bus driver, Peter, who was a fantastic chauffeur for this past week.

We checked into Hotel Erzgiesserrei Europe, brought our luggage to our room, and took about 5 minutes to freshen up before meeting back down in the lobby to go to dinner together.

We went to a German restaurant called Hackerhaus for our farewell dinner. The restaurant has a history dating back to the 15th century.

The menu offered a variety of German dishes, but the one that came highly recommended by others in our group was the Schweinshaxn with a knödl, which is a boiled potato dumpling.

A schweinshaxe is a German dish made up of roasted ham hock, or “pork knuckle”. This is basically the knee of a pig leg or the portion of the leg just above the ankle. We were told the best part is the crispy rind on the outside.

Honestly, it was a whole lot of deliciousness, but I couldn’t eat the crispy part without thinking about the skin of the little piggy knee I was eating. The meat itself, though, was tender, juicy and exploding with a hammy-bacon flavor. Just because we were in Germany, we ordered a side of sauerkraut and spaetzle. TOO. MUCH. FOOD!
And just in case we weren’t full enough, we topped off the meal with a variety of desserts, which included apfelstrudel (apple strudel), kaiserschmarrn (shredded pancake with a side of apple sauce), and a side of vanilla ice cream for good measure. A sweet ending to a sweet farewell.
